New cultural arts center, theater opens in Georgia city

By The Associated Press

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — The city of Savannah, Georgia, has opened a new cultural arts center.

The Savannah Morning News reports the 39,000-square-foot facility hosted a grand opening celebration Saturday that featured live performances by local artists and art organizations.

The center includes a 464-seat performing arts theater that was named after late Savannah jazz musician Ben Tucker. It also features a concessions space, a conference room, a set workshop, backstage dressing rooms, studio classrooms and administrative offices.

Cultural Resources Director Lissette Garcia Arrogante says classes are set to begin next month and a youth summer camp is planned to start in June.

WSAV-TV reports the $24 million center was paid for using local tax revenue.
