West Hall High School students charged after fight on school grounds

Six students were charged with affray, and some of them face additional charges, following an after-school fight at West Hall High School Tuesday.

Lt. Scott Ware with the Hall County Sheriff's Office said the incident began during bus loading time after classes were dismissed. "Resource officers and school administrators noticed there was a fight going on between six students," said Ware. "They were all females and all juveniles, that is, under 16 years old."

The SRO and faculty stepped in to intervene. A press release from Gordon Higgins with the Hall County School System said administrators reported a brief, verbal exchange occurred among the students in the crosswalk area in front of the school to board the buses.

During the fight, Ware said the SRO, who is also a deputy with the Sheriff's Office, was intentionally struck in the face by one of the girls.

"I think the deputy, I spoke with him [Wednesday] morning, he's got a visible scratch on his nose, but other than that he'll be fine," Ware said. That student faces an additional charge of felony obstruction. "That's the only felony charge out of all of these."

Ware said another girl intentionally struck a school official several times in the chest. She also faces a misdemeanor simple battery in addition to the affray charge.

None of the juveniles were injured in the fight.

The girls were released to the custody of their parents, with a complaint pending in juvenile court. Higgins said in the press release that each student involved was suspended from all classes and activities, pending the outcome of the Sheriff's Office investigation.
