Boys basketball: Watson resigns as Branch boys coach after one season

FLOWERY BRANCH – Chezley Watson stepped down as the Flowery Branch boys basketball coach Tuesday morning, according to athletic director Jimmy Lawler.

“Coach Watson is a fine man and excellent basketball coach," Lawler said. "He did a good job with our players this year and we are sorry that he has decided to pursue other interests, and we wish him the best of luck.  We will begin immediately to start the process to find the next head coach.”

Watson, who only coached the Falcons for one season, says he will pursue other career opportunities.

"Being a member of the Flowery Branch family has been a wonderful experience, which has afforded me many valuable opportunities to learn and grow as a person,” Watson said in a statement.

The Falcons finished the 2018 campaign with a 1-24 record. The team's only win came against West Hall, 59-57 on Dec. 4.

Before taking the Flowery Branch job last year, Watson had been an assistant girls basketball coach at Jefferson.

He's also no stranger to the Hall County basketball scene, holding the East Hall boys career scoring record with 2,411 points after playing with the Vikings 1993-97. He also played at the University of Virginia for three seasons (1998-2001) before transferring to West Georgia, where he led the team in scoring as a senior and was named first team all-conference.
