Habersham County woman transported for care after being rescued by 911 caller

CLARKESVILLE — A fire in the Batesville community of Habersham County sent one person to the hospital Tuesday.

Habersham County E-9-1-1 received a call at 9:47 a.m. of a structure fire with entrapment at 2290 Ga. 255, according to Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black.

“Caller reported that one person, a female, was still in the structure unresponsive just inside the doorway and they were attempting to pull them out, Black said.

Habersham County Emergency Services Stations 13 and 16, Battalion 1, Captain 1, 801, 802, 811, and Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Department were dispatched and responded, Black said.

A supervisor requested White County be dispatched to respond with a tanker for mutual aid and an additional ambulance due to information provided of possibly one person still in the structure.

The 2,000-square-foot, single-story, wood-frame home had smoke and fire showing from the outside when units arrived.

“One female patient was found outside by first arriving units,” Black said “Patient was treated for smoke inhalation and transported by Habersham Emergency Services to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.”

Black said safety concerns created by the fire eventually caused firefighters to withdrawal.

“Units made an aggressive interior attack and were able to control the main body of fire in the main living area, but due to extending into the attic area, crews were forced to evacuate and go into a defensive mode with large volume of fire overhead and structure becoming unsafe for interior work,” Black said.

Firefighters remained on scene into the afternoon.

Black said the caller who pulled the victim from the home likely saved her life and, at a minimum, lessened the potential outcome.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to assist with the investigation.

At last report, the victim was reported to be stable, according to Black.
