Republican Barton wins runoff for north Georgia House seat

By The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) — Former Calhoun city councilman Matt Barton has won a runoff election between two Republicans for a northwest Georgia state House seat.

Barton received 1,712 votes to Jesse Vaughn's 1,399 votes Tuesday, according to unofficial results from the Georgia secretary of state.

The district covers portions of Gordon and Murray counties.

A special election was called to fill the seat after Republican Rep. John Meadows died in November. Meadows, former chairman of the powerful House Rules Committee, served the district since his election in 2004.

Vaughn received the most votes in the six-way special election held on January 8, but didn't get over 50 percent needed to avoid a runoff with the second-placed Barton.

News outlets report that Barton criticized Vaughn for his past political affiliation as a Democrat.
