A vacant house in the 700 block of Oak Street in Gainesville was destroyed Friday by an early-morning fire, the Gainesville Fire Department said.
No one was injured in the fire, which started just before 2 a.m. The fire apparently started in the bedroom by what was believed to be a homeless occupant, the department said in a news release. No one was present at the house when firefighters arrived.
When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke and fire was visible from the 1,000-square-foot structure. The department said the fire spread quickly because sheetrock has been removed from the ceiling.
The home, valued at about $60,000, was ruled a total loss.
