Lula employees will pay tribute to former mayor during funeral procession

LULA – Even though the current City of Lula staff was not on the job when Joseph Douglas “Doug” Morris served as mayor and on the city council, employees have asked to pay tribute to him.

“I don’t think we actually have any city employees who served here at the time Doug was mayor, but they’ve all known him,” said Mayor Jim Grier. “He’s been a figure in the community even after his term as mayor and on the council and, as a show of respect, the employees would like to line the street here in front of city hall as the funeral procession passes on the way to his final resting place.”

Morris, 72, faithfully served his community, his church and his country. A U.S. Army veteran, Morris served two years in Vietnam.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 15, at Hillside Chapel Funeral Home in Gainesville. Burial will follow in Belton Cemetery on Seventh Street in Lula with military honors.
