Driver blames spilled coffee for serious-injury wreck in Stephens County

A Lavonia man told the Georgia State Patrol he spilled coffee on himself, resulting in a wreck that seriously injured an Eastanollee man last week.

Nicholas Reynolds, 34, of Lavonia was driving his 1999 GMC Sierra C-1500 pickup truck north in the right lane of Ga. 17 in Eastanollee at the time of the wreck, about 6:50 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, according to Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa.

Reynolds was traveling behind a 1988 Jeep Comanche driven by Thomas Bush, 60, of Eastanollee, according to GSP.

Reynolds’ truck struck the Jeep Comanche in the rear, according to GSP. After impact, the Jeep Comanche rotate clockwise and traveled down the east side of the road on Ga. 17. The Comanche overturned and came to rest facing south on its top.

“Driver 1 [Reynolds] stated his coffee spilled on his leg prior to impact and he was trying to pick it up,” the GSP wreck report states.

Bush was seriously injured and was airlifted from the scene to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, according to GSP.

The report lists driving distracted and following too closely as contributing to the crash.

Charges are pending in the wreck, according to GSP.
