Mayor: Police chief fired, department had high turnover rate

By The Associated Press

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Officials say a Georgia police chief has been fired.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Athens-Clarke County terminated Scott Freeman on Thursday after he served as its chief of police for three years. Athens Mayor Nancy Denson did not know all of the specifics but says Freeman was fired by County Manager Blaine Williams.

Freeman posted on Facebook that he is no longer police chief.

Denson says the police department was experiencing a high turnover rate as officers were unhappy with Freeman's leadership. The mayor says she was not surprised he was fired because there were several issues. She also says Freeman is a good man and wishes him well.

Williams was unavailable to comment Thursday evening. The county manager is responsible for hiring and firing department leaders.
