Nearly $400K worth of crystal meth found in storage unit

A White County Sheriff's Office deputy is credited with being observant and leading investigators to a major drug find.

Agent Mitchell Posey of the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office (ARDEO) said the the deputy was making his rounds at a White County storage facility on Friday and discovered an estimated eight lbs. of crystal methamphetamine and a stolen handgun in one of the units.

"The deputy noticed a storage unit door was open and feared it had been burglarized," Posey said in a written statement. "He investigated further and found the illegal narcotics."

Street value of the illegal drugs is $395,000, according to Posey.

He said the discovery led investigators to execute a search warrant on a neighboring unit; they found $12,000 cash in that unit.

One arrest has been made in the case. Jason Scott Hawkins, 43, was arrested at his residence in Cleveland and charged with trafficking methamphetamine, according to Posey.
