JEFFERSON — Jefferson baseball has been here once already this postseason.

The Dragons won their opening playoff series in three games, and on Thursday they will look to repeat that success in the Class 4A quarterfinals after splitting Wednesday's doubleheader with Woodward Academy in Jefferson.

The Dragons (23-11) won Game 1 5-4 only to watch the War Eagles respond with a 5-1 win in Game 2.

Jefferson claimed the opening contest of the series in dramatic fashion, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh -- capped by Mason Cooper's walk-off RBI single. Sammy Elegreet and Clayton Jones also notched RBI in the frame to respond to a three-run top half that had seen the visitors take their only lead of the contest, 4-2.

Patrick Hickox claimed the victory, pitching a complete game after yielding 6 hits and striking out 5 Woodward batters, while not allowing a walk.

The Dragons so nearly sank their own cause, committing five errors -- all of the War Eagles' runs were unearned.

Jefferson's offense, which notched 8 hits, came to the rescue, however, led by Ryan Godfrey, who drove in 2 runs while going 2-for-4 with a double. Lane Watkins also produced a hit, drew 2 walks and scored 2 runs.

Woodward's bats responded in Game 2, however, racking up 9 hits, including a 2-for-3 performance from Michael Sorrow, who also drove in two runs.

The War Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and led 5-0 before Jefferson notched its only run in the top of the sixth.

The Dragons recorded just three hits against three different Woodward pitchers, including a double from Watkins. Elegreet also had a hit and drove in a run.

Jefferson will take on Woodward in Game 3 beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday.
