Controlled burn on Eberhart Street in Gainesville Monday

The Gainesville Fire Department is conducting a controlled burn of an old house on Eberhart Street.

Fire crews will be on scene of the burning structure for "real life" training scenarios Monday, Division Chief Keith Smith said in an email statement. They began the drills at 9 a.m. and will be there until the structure burns completely.

"In order to do the controlled burn we have received permission from the state and had to remove the shingles and items that are not allowed to be burned to protect the environment. People will see the smoke in the area throughout the day," said Smith.

Eberhart Street is located roughly a block off E.E. Butler Parkway and runs from High Street to MLK Jr. Boulevard.
