Jefferson Police interviewing 'person of interest' in alleged school Snapchat threat

Jefferson High School officials posted the following statement on the school's website Tuesday morning: In the early morning hours of March 13, 2018 the Jefferson Police Department was made aware of a potential threat against a school. This threat was derived from what appears to have been a snapchat account. At this time the Jefferson Police Department has a person of interest in custody and is in the process of dissecting all the facts that are available at this time. Since this investigation is still ongoing the Jefferson Police Department is unable to provide the details of the case. The Jefferson Police Department feels that the schools within their jurisdiction are as safe as they are on any other given day.
Jefferson Police were interviewing a person of interest Tuesday morning following an alleged social media threat against Jefferson High School.

Police Chief Joe Wirthman said police were notified through a third party call about the potentially threatening Snapchat post early Tuesday morning.

"My officers went out, looked at the Snapchat," Wirthman said. "We got investigators involved right away, and went out and were able to contact the person that may have made these statements on Snapchat."

While investigators questioned the person, Wirthman said the District Attorney's Office had been notified.

"The schools are safe.  We feel (they're) secure and that they're safe," Wirthman said.

The chief said officers notified the school system, and would provide updates as they become available.
