Cornelia wreck injures police officer, Baldwin woman

CORNELIA — Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa has released preliminary details of a two-vehicle wreck near Burger King in Cornelia Sunday night.

The wreck happened about 7:45 p.m. on Historic 441 in the area of J Warren Road and involved a Toyota Highlander driven by Debra Buchanan, 61, of Baldwin, and a Cornelia Police Department Ford Explorer patrol vehicle.

The patrol vehicle was northbound on Historic 441 and was attempting a left turn onto J Warren Road, according to Trooper Trent Kirchhefer. Buchanan’s Highlander struck the police vehicle in the passenger’s side front and rear doors with its front.

The police vehicle overturned onto its top and came to rest on J Warren Road, according to Kirchhefer. The Toyota came to rest on Historic Highway 441 facing southbound.

The police officer, whose name was not released as of 11 p.m. Sunday, was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Kirchhefer said. Buchanan complained of injuries to her chest and back and was taken by ambulance to Habersham Medical Center.

Both drivers were in stable condition and initially believed to have no major injuries, Kirchhefer said.

No additional details have been released at this time.
