Suwanee, Lilburn playgrounds to get new equipment, become more accessible

Two Gwinnett county parks, including one in our area, have received SPLOST funding for improved handicap-accessibility and new playground equipment.

George Pierce Park in Suwanee will receive a net climbing tower, a tightrope and balance activities, a multiperson seesaw, multiperson spinner and a small climbing dome. A toddler area will feature a small sand table, slide, and climber, plus a track and tunnel designed for kids to bring pocket size toy cars. Transitions will also have slopes instead of curbs for better access. The new equipment will be located near the pond and pavilion.

"As always, we're grateful to voters for their ongoing support of the SPLOST programs that are making these park upgrades possible," said District 1 Commissioner Jace Brooks. "This new playground equipment will let all kids visiting George Pierce Park enjoy a playground designed for universal access."

In Mountain Park in Lilburn, a wheelchair-accessible sensory tunnel, ramps, decks, slides, climbers, activity panels and a new tower. An area for toddlers includes a two-story playhouse and sand table. These play areas will be located near the Pounds Road side of the park.

The $750,192 contract for both parks was granted Tuesday. Landscape Structures Inc. was the lowest responsive bidder to remove and replace the playground equipment and surfaces.
