Dawsonville pastor authors book on wife of Charles Spurgeon

A new biography written by a Dawsonville minister gives insight into the life of Susannah Spurgeon, wife of influential Baptist Pastor Charles Spurgeon.

Author and Pastor Ray Rhodes said she's an important influencer in the Christian faith. "We would not have the Charles Spurgeon we have today if he had not had Susie as his wife," Rhodes said.

He said 12 years into their marriage, a very active "Susie" became homebound due to gynecological surgical complications. He explained that, "She was an invalid for much of their marriage and yet authored five books, edited and contributed to the four volume autobiography of Charles Spurgeon, edited his magazine after he died, planted a church, and the list goes on."

He first gained interest in her life when writing his doctoral thesis on the couple. "It's hard for us to believe this now, but Charles Spurgeon may have gone insane without Susie," Rhodes said. "So, that is how important she was to his life."

A small biography of her life came out in 1903, making this the first full biography of her life to ever be published.

Pastor Rhodes serves the Grace Community Church in Dawsonville.
