Ex-cop accused of shooting man after motocross event charged

By The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) — A former Atlanta police sergeant faces charges after prosecutors say he shot a man while working off duty directing traffic after a motocross event.

A grand jury on Wednesday indicted Mathieu Cadeau, 52, on charges of aggravated assault, reckless conduct and violation of oath by a public officer, Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said in a news release Thursday.

It wasn't immediately clear if Cadeau had an attorney who could comment on the charges.

Noel Hall and his family had traveled from their home in North Carolina to watch his son in a motocross event at the Georgia Dome on Feb. 25, 2017. As they were leaving in their van just before 10:30 p.m., they encountered Cadeau directing traffic at an intersection, prosecutors said.

Hall was trying to turn left to retrieve his son's motocross bike, but Cadeau wouldn't let him make the turn. The two talked briefly before Hall tried to make the turn anyway and Cadeau took out his service weapon and fired into the van, prosecutors said.

The bullet hit Hall in the back of the arm and went into his side before exiting through his chest, missing his heart by 2 inches (5 centimeters), prosecutors said. It then went through the passenger side window, nearly hitting Hall's wife.

Hall survived and none of the five other people in the van was injured.

The Atlanta Police Department fired Cadeau on May 18, 2017.
