The Latest: Ex-Trump campaign aide wants off GPS monitoring

By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on developments in the special counsel's Russia investigation (all times local):

1:120 p.m.

A former Donald Trump campaign aide cooperating with the special counsel's Russia investigation is asking a federal judge to let him off GPS monitoring while he's awaiting sentencing.

A lawyer for Rick Gates says in a court filing that Gates has been a "model cooperating witness" for special counsel Robert Mueller and other federal investigators. Attorney Thomas Green also says Gates' cooperation sessions since his guilty plea this year have been "numerous" and continue "to this day."

Gates is a longtime protege of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. Gates served in a senior campaign role and later worked for Trump's inauguration committee.

Green is also asking U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson to remove Gates' curfew and allow him to travel to a wider area.

The judge in one of Paul Manafort's criminal cases is throwing a wrench into special counsel Robert Mueller's plans for the former Trump campaign chairman's cooperation.

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III says in a new order that the terms of Manafort's plea deal cut last month set a timeline that is "highly unusual" compared with how he handles cases of government cooperators.

Manafort's plea agreement deferred his sentencing until after he concludes his cooperation. It also pushed off the government's decision on whether to retry him on 10 counts on which jurors deadlocked until that time.

But Ellis says he wants to sentence Manafort within the next few months regardless of whether Manafort has finished cooperating.

Ellis has set a hearing for next week on the matter.
