Franklin County investigating shooting death of 5-year-old child

CARNESVILLE — Franklin County Sheriff Steve Thomas has just released details of a Saturday-afternoon shooting incident that claimed the life of a child. 

Saturday afternoon, Franklin County 9-1-1 dispatched deputies to St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital in Lavonia for a child arriving at the hospital with a child who had been shot. 

The 5-year-old child had suffered a gunshot wound to the upper chest, and was flown by helicopter to an Atlanta trauma center. The child succumbed to the gunshot wound. 

Law enforcement personnel responded to the home where the child resided in the Gumlog community. 

Investigators remained at the home conducting interviews and evidence collection through early Sunday. 

The investigation by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Northern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, Franklin County Coroner’s Office, Georgia Division of Family and Children Services, and Georgia Bureau of Investigation Medical Examiner’s Office.
