Girls basketball: Union keeps 7-AAA race tight; Branch and Buford dominate

DAHLONEGA — The Union County girls basketball team edged out Lumpkin County 36-33 on Tuesday in Dahlonega -- a scoreline that kept the Lady Panthers very much in the race for the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Region 7-AAA tournament.

Union County moved to 6-5 in 7-AAA, staying step-for-step with East Hall and North Hall in the race for No. 2 -- Greater Atlanta Christian has run away with the No. 1 seed -- in a competition that will go down to the final day of the regular season.

Kait McCarter scored a game-high 14 points -- 12 in the first half -- for the Lady Panthers, while Bailey Daniel added 11.

Isabel Davenport scored 10 points to lead Lumpkin County.

Union County plays host to Dawson County on Friday. Lumpkin County travels to North Hall on Friday.


FLOWERY BRANCH GIRLS 57,
CLARKE CENTRAL 29

The Lady Falcons (19-5, 9-2 Region 8-AAAAA) ran out to a 14-point first quarter lead and never looked back en route to the win on Tuesday.

Ashley Woodroffe paced Flowery Branch with 17 points, while Taniyah Worth added 11 points and 14 rebounds.

The Branch plays host to Walnut Grove on Friday.


BUFORD GIRLS 72,
WALNUT GROVE 23

The Lady Wolves (21-3, 11-0 Region 8-AAAAA) cruised to the win on Tuesday in Buford.

Tory Ozment scored 28 points to pace Buford, while Audrey Weiner added 13 and Mary Walters 9 in the win.

Buford will travel to Johnson on Friday to close the regular season.


PUTNAM COUNTY GIRLS 44,
BANKS COUNTY 25

The Lady Leopards suffered a tough loss in Region 8-AA play on Tuesday.

Maddie Thomas paced Banks County with 9 points. Allison Smith and Jaycie Bowen scored 5 apiece.
