Smoke detectors credited for Buford family's escape from house fire

Gwinnett Fire officials credit a smoke alarm helped a Buford family escape their home after a fire early Thursday morning.

The fire in the single-story wood frame home in the 4300 block of Sardis Church Road started in the wall and spread to the attic, Gwinnett County Fire officials said in a press release. An exact cause has yet to be determined.

The homeowners were alerted by smoke alarms in the home and left the building after finding the fire in the wall and attic. All five adult family members living in the home were uninjured.

Investigators said the fire caused extensive damage in the attic, while smoke, heat and water caused moderate damage to the rest of the home. The Red Cross was called to assist the family.
