Hall County Sheriff's Office looking for suspect after child fends off would-be abductor

A 10 year old boy escaped a kidnapper Tuesday afternoon, Hall County Sheriff's deputies said.

The attempted abduction took place at a home in the 4500 block of Old Cornelia Highway, according to Deputy Stephen Wilbanks.

Wilbanks said the child was taking a booster seat out to his mother's vehicle in the driveway around 4 p.m. when he was approached from behind by an unknown adult male.

"As he was putting that booster seat in the car, he was approached from behind by an unknown male, who had come from behind the residence," said Wilbanks. "That perpetrator then grabbed the victim and started dragging him towards the back of the home next door."

Wilbanks said the child was resistant and the perpetrator let go after a short distance. The boy then ran back to his home, telling his mother, who in turn called 911.

"He put up a fight, he made noise, he did not give up and that's the key we need to be teaching our children - all of us, for that matter, but especially our children - is don't willingly allow yourself to become a victim. Fight with everything that you have to get away from that individual and make as much noise as possible."

Wilbanks said investigators used K-9s to track the trail from the location to Roy Cagle Road. "Where they ended up on Roy Cagle, there's a lot of homes there. A lot of foot traffic from humans as well as domestic dogs and our canine teams lost the trail in that area."

The suspect is described as a white male, roughly six feet tall with a medium build. He wore black jeans a white shirt and covered his face with a black cloth.

The boy suffered minor scrapes and bruises and was checked out by Hall County Fire Services EMTs, however he did not need to be hospitalized.

The Sheriff’s Office request that anyone who saw this individual or anyone with information about the incident call the Criminal Investigations Division at 770-531-6879. Additionally, residents in the area are urged to exercise caution and remain alert for anyone demonstrating suspicious behavior, and if they observe anything to call 911. The Sheriff’s Office will be increasing patrol presence in the area in an attempt to locate the perpetrator.
