Gainesville coupled charged after toddler ingests meth

A couple remained in the Hall County Jail Tuesday morning, charged in connection with a incident where a three-year-old child inadvertently consumed methamphetamine, authorities said.

"As I understand it, the child is just fine now," Hall County Sheriff's Lt. Scott Ware said Tuesday.

The couple, at least one of them a parent of the child, were each charged with a felony last week, second-degree cruelty to children, according to Ware.

Authorities identified the two as Brenda Chadale Jones, 28, and Joshua James Starley, 31.  Ware said he believed the two were in a romantic relationship.

The alleged incident happened on July 23 at a location on High View Court off of Chestatee Road, according to a sheriff's office news release.

"(Jones and Starley) were negligent and left methamphetamine unsecured, and the child inadvertently ingested methamphetamine and required medical attention," Ware said.  "The child was actually monitored and treated.  In fact, tests indicated the child had in fact ingested methamphetamine."

The sheriff's office and Hall County Department of Family and Children Services investigated.  Ware said warrants were obtained for Jones' and Starley's arrest in the case this past Thursday.

Jones was booked into jail Saturday evening on the one count.  Starley was booked into jail on the day of the incident on several other charges.
