Fuel price reports differ, however both agree gas prices up

Georgia gas prices are up three cents to $2.18 a gallon as of Sunday, according to the latest fuel price report by AAA. However, fuel insight company GasBuddy reports the average retail price for gas in Georgia has only risen 1.8 cents per gallon, putting their average price at $2.12 a gallon Sunday.

That's a six cent difference between the fuel reports.

“Consumers saw a sudden swing at the pump last week, as summer demand soars and crude inventories declined,” said Mark Jenkins with AAA. “Gas prices should trend higher through the second half of the summer, and could challenge this year’s high of $2.29 before it’s all over. Fortunately, gas prices will drop after Labor Day, as demand weakens and refiners switch to winter-blend gasoline.”

AAA reports the prices are rising simply to take another plunge in the fall. The most expensive gas price averages in Georgia are in Atlanta a $2.25, Savannah at $2.16 and Athens at $2.12; the least expensive gas price averages in Georgia are in Augusta-Aiken at $2.03, Macon at $2.06, and Valdosta $2.09.

GasBuddy, which surveys 5,883 gas outlets each day, reports Augusta prices are up 4.4 cents at $2.00; Macon is up 3.5 cents per gallon to $2.05 and Atlanta was up 1.4 cents to $2.25.

Including the change in gas prices in Georgia during the past week, prices yesterday were 12.1 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 3.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago, according to the GasBuddy report.

The national average has increased 1.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 11.7 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.
