New superintendent approved for Savannah-Chatham schools

By The Associated Press

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Coastal Georgia's largest school district has a new leader.

The Savannah-Chatham School Board voted 5-4 Monday for Ann Levett to become superintendent of the 37,000-student district.

The Savannah Morning News (http://bit.ly/2raw3Dh ) reports that Levett, who has been the district's superintendent, was chosen after board interviews of four finalists on May 4. Other finalists were from Philadelphia, St. Louis and Kansas City, Kansas.

Current Superintendent Thomas Lockamy is retiring at the end of the school year.

Board member Connie Hall says Levett is the most qualified and experienced candidate and her selection will allow the district to move ahead quickly.

Levett says she wants to focus on improvements in struggling schools and making sure every school has well-trained teachers. She wants to explore incentives to attract teachers to lower-performing schools.
