Amerigroup Georgia Opens Multispecialty Health Clinic in Fulton County Juvenile Court House to Improve Families’ Access to Care

By The Associated Press

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 2017--Amerigroup Community Care in Georgia has joined clinical provider partners, Resurgia Health Solutions, Help a Child Smile and Eastchester Family Services to offer multispecialty health care services at the Fulton County Juvenile Justice Center in Atlanta. Clinic facilities provide both primary and behavioral health care services, while an onsite mobile dental unit is available to address dental needs. The services have been established by Amerigroup to offer convenient access to care for families who are involved with the juvenile court system, particularly Amerigroup Medicaid members and children enrolled in the Georgia Families 360° program.

“Amerigroup Georgia has been developing innovative approaches to providing specialized services to children and families for a long time, and we have established a deep understanding of members’ unique needs, including the barriers they face when it comes to accessing health care,” said Urcel R. Fields, president of Amerigroup Georgia. “With the help and collaboration of our valued partners, we are proud to launch our Fulton County Juvenile Justice Center clinic to provide high-quality, effective and efficient health care to families who need the convenience of addressing medical needs while taking care of other responsibilities at the court house.”

In 2014, Amerigroup Georgia was appointed by the state as the single managed care organization responsible for coordinating statewide Medicaid services and benefits for children enrolled in the Georgia Families 360° program. This program serves children, youth and young adults in foster care; children and youth receiving adoption assistance; and select youth involved in the juvenile justice system. The Fulton County Juvenile Justice Center handles the placement and legal matters of thousands of Georgia Families 360° participants annually, and it is common for many of these children and families to be hindered by lack of access to medical, trauma and dental care. Many conditions often go untreated, making it harder for families to stabilize and transition into a better quality of life.

“When Amerigroup approached Resurgia with this unique model for addressing a common problem among a vulnerable population, we were thrilled at the opportunity to help increase access to care,” said Dr. Mark Bradshaw, chief medical officer of Resurgia Health Solutions.

Christy Gibson, DNP, Resurgia nurse practitioner also stated, “We have already started treating children and are finding that many have acute medical issues that would have likely gone untreated, so we are pleased to be part of an innovative solution that removes barriers and ensures children are healthy.”

Amerigroup serves more than 25,000 members who currently participate in the Georgia Families 360° program. The largest concentration of children and families who participate in Georgia Families 360° are located in Fulton County, and are required to go through the juvenile court for various reasons. Amerigroup’s newly established clinical facilities allow visitors to access primary care services; early and periodic screening; diagnostic and treatment services (EPSDT); immunizations; lab services; dental care; counseling/therapy services and more. This approach to enabling access to care at an onsite court house clinic is the first of its kind for Amerigroup and currently being analyzed as a scalable best practice for improving future health outcomes across the nation.
