Piedmont's Olson and Langley earn CoSIDA academic All-District honors

TOWSON, Md. — The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) has released the 2017 Academic All-District teams in baseball with both Griffin Olson and Zach Langlet making the prestigious listing. 

Both players will now be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-American status by virtue of their selection to the Academic All-District teams following in the footsteps of graduate assistant coach Josh Thomas who was the first Piedmont baseball player to earn all-district honors in 2015. 

The CoSIDA Academic All-American listing is set to be released at the end of the month. 

Olson sits atop the NCAA career leader board for sacrifice hits as he compiled 51 sacrifice hits in his career with the Green and Gold including a single-season high of 18 in this his senior season. Olson posted his best batting average of his career this season as well leading the Lions amongst everyday starters with a .363 as one of two players with over 60 hits in 2017 for Piedmont. 

Majoring in Business Management, Olson is a member of the Delta Mu Delta academic honor society and has also earned USA South Academic All-Conference honors in each of the three seasons awarded to this point. 

Langley started 39 games for the Lions in 2017 with a .303 batting average as he too saved the best for last with his best batting average coming in his senior campaign. Langley had the most triples on the team with four this season as he had seven extra base hits. 

Majoring in Business Management, Langley is a Dean's list, President's List and AD Honor roll member in each semester enrolled. The senior has also earned USA South Academic All-Conference honors in each of the three seasons awarded to this point. 

Olson and Langley were selected for this year's Capital One Academic All-District honors through voting by CoSIDA members in District V, which encompasses Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale), have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. In addition, nominated student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's matches at their respective positions.
