Lumpkin teacher's attorney: 'arrest and allegation baseless'

The attorney representing a teacher accused of touching a 14-year-old female student inappropriately at Lumpkin County High School called the allegation and arrest, "shocking."

A.J. Richman of the Richman Law Firm represents Flavio Colunga, 36, of Dahlonega.  Colunga was arrested Tuesday on charges of child molestation, sexual battery and sexual assault.

"My client is a family man, a father, a husband, a coach, and a teacher. The community supports him. And I plan to prove this allegation and arrest are baseless," Richman said in an email to AccessWDUN.

In a news release issued Wednesday, Lumpkin County Sheriff's Lt. Chris Pfrogner said the allegation was initially investigated by high school administrators before being turned over to authorities.

"The fact that somebody, and in this case a stand-up teacher who was liked by all students and respected by the entire faculty, can be arrested because of a single accusation is shocking," Richman said Thursday.  "I hope the officer did a thorough and complete investigation before they arrested Flavio. Ours has already begun."

Colunga remained in the Lumpkin County Detention Center Thursday afternoon, according to Pfrogner.  He said Colunga had not seen a judge yet for bond.

In the Wednesday release, Progner said two additional female students had come forward with allegations.

"The investigation is still ongoing, and more details will be available at a later date," Progner said.

The Lumpkin County High School website lists Colunga as a Spanish teacher.
