Two Lumpkin County teachers face charges in separate, unrelated cases

Two Lumpkin County teachers faced charges this week for alleged incidents involving students, authorities said.

On Tuesday, Lumpkin County Sheriff's deputies arrested Flavio Colunga on charges of child molestation, sexual battery and sexual assault, according to a media release from the sheriff's office.

"These charges are the result of an investigation into an allegation that Mr. Colunga had touched a 14-year-old female student inappropriately," Sheriff's Lt. Chris Progner wrote in the release.

The allegations were initially investigated by Lumpkin County High School administrators before being turned over to the sheriff's office.  Colunga was a teacher at the school, according to Progner.

"Currently, two additional female students have come forward with allegations against Mr. Colunga as well. The investigation is still ongoing, and more details will be available at a later date," Progner said.

Colunga was being held at the Lumpkin County Detention Center.  Bond had not been set as of Wednesday afternoon.

In an earlier and unrelated case, a teacher turned himself in to the Lumpkin County Detention Center Monday to face felony cruelty to children in the 1st degree and misdemeanor simple battery charges.

The investigation centered on an alleged altercation between Timothy Garner, 59, and a 17-year-old student at Lumpkin County Alternative School last month, according to Pfrogner.

"The physical altercation occurred on April 21st around lunchtime in the lunchroom of the school," Progner wrote.  "The warrants for Mr. Garner stipulate that he shoved the student and grabbed him by the throat during the altercation."

Garner's bond was set at $7700.00 for both charges.

"(Garner) was a teacher and a assistant coach for middle school baseball," Progner wrote in an email.
