Reyes Kalifah Gibbs, 34, of Greenville, S.C., is charged with burglary for breaking into the vehicle in Homer, theft by receiving stolen property for the original vehicle, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of Ecstasy (MDMA), according to Banks County Chief Deputy Shawn Wilson.
Banks County Sheriff's Office, acting on a lookout from Franklin County Sheriff's Office, located the stolen car in Homer, Wilson said. The driver of the vehicle fled south on foot and broke into the second vehicle, which was parked at a local business.
Wilson said the sheriff's office immediately notified the school system when deputies learned the man had fled on foot, and system officials opted to lock down all schools in the area for about an hour, until the man was taken into custody.
Wilson said Gibbs fled into the woods, where he was taken into custody by deputies.
Banks County Sheriff Carlton Speed said he appreciates all of the citizens who called 9-1-1 to report the individual, saying those tips helped deputies to contain the man and bring the incident to a close quickly.
