Banks County makes kidnapping arrest within an hour of incident

HOMER — A Commerce man is jailed in Banks County after allegedly kidnapping his fianceé's young child Wednesday.

Banks County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to Golden Pantry in Homer at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday regarding the reported kidnapping

When they arrived, a female complainant told them she and her fiancé, Dontavious Contrell Rucker, recently separated and she had refused to talk to him over the past few days, according to Sheriff's Lt. Carissa McFaddin. The woman then showed deputies a text message that Rucker sent to her showing that he had her 6-year-old child.

"The female advised that Rucker did not have any type of legal guardianship over her child and that he did not have permission to pick up that child from the school," McFaddin said. "The female did inform deputies that she had forgotten to remove Rucker from the permission list at the child’s school, but had never thought that this would be an issue."

A lookout for Rucker, his vehicle and the child, containing descriptions of each, was issued to surrounding agencies.

"This was completed during the time that Banks County Investigators worked with the Georgia Bureau of Investigations to activate an Amber Alert," McFaddin said. "Within an hour, with the assistance of Jefferson Police Department, deputies were successful in locating Rucker and the child at a residence within Jefferson."

The child, who was unharmed, was returned to the mother.

Rucker, 27, of Commerce was arrested and charged with kidnapping. He was transported to the Banks County Detention Center.
