Seven departments battle fire at Mount Vernon Mills in Alto

BALDWIN — Operations have resumed at Mount Vernon Mills in Alto after an early-morning fire and evacuation Monday.

“We were dispatched around 4:30 a.m. to a reported commercial structure fire,” according to Baldwin Fire Chief Joe Roy. “Upon arrival, we found fire coming from the front and side of the building. There was fire in the air handler, tunnels, and roof of the building.”

Personnel from Baldwin, Cornelia, Habersham County, Banks County, Clarkesville, Demorest, and Lee Arrendale State Prison fire departments responded.

Four work divisions were established to extinguish the fire, Roy said.

No injuries were reported, according to Roy.

“I would like to thank Mount Vernon Mills maintenance crews for helping with the situation at hand,” Roy said. “I would also like to thank each and every firefighter who responded and let them know another ‘job well done’.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
