Teen suffers critical injuries in Gainesville crash

A 14-year-old Gainesville girl suffered critical injuries in a traffic accident on Ga. 53/Dawsonville Highway near Ahaluna Drive Thursday evening, police said.

The two-vehicle crash happened on Dawsonville Highway at the entrance to a three-restaurant development that includes Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen, Olive Garden and Buffalo Wild Wings, according to Gainesville Police Cpl. Jessica Van.

"One vehicle failed to yield when making a left turn and caused another vehicle to impact it on the side," Van wrote in an email.

A passenger in a Toyota Corolla, identified as Hallie Hein, 14, was transported to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston with critical injuries, according to Van.  The car's driver, Helen Hein, 38, of Gainesville, was treated for minor injuries at an area hospital.

The second vehicle involved in the accident was a Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by Jonathan Earnest, 34, of Dawsonville.  Earnest did not suffer injuries, according to police.

"Helen Hein was charged for failure to yield turning left," Van stated.

The accident happened shortly before 6:00 p.m.
