Commerce school officials, police investigate racist graffiti

Officials with Commerce City Schools are offering a reward for information that identifies the person who wrote racial slurs in a bathroom stall.

It happened Wednesday in a boys' bathroom at Commerce High School, according to a letter posted on the system's website by Superintendent Joy R. Tolbert.

"At that point, that restroom was closed and the graffiti was removed. However, someone took a picture of the graffiti and posted it on social media prior to the restroom being closed," Tolbert wrote.

According to a photo shared by Atlanta television reporters, the graffiti appears to include a list of names underneath a title of "(N-words) to eliminate." Tolbert said in a phone interview that it also included phrases like "white power."

The Commerce Police Department is assisting with the investigation. Tolbert said a $350 reward, put together by the school and police, was on the table for the student who identifies the culprit.

Tolbert said "this type of behavior will not be tolerated at Commerce High School."

Anyone with information on the culprit is asked to contact school officials by phone at (706) 335-5500.
