66 schools in northeast Georgia pick up governor's awards

66 schools in 13 northeast Georgia school systems are Highest Performing or Greatest Gains award winners for 2017, according to Governor Nathan Deal's office.

The local winners are among 226 Georgia public schools in 54 districts to receive the honors for the year.

"Highest Performing schools must earn a three-year average College and Career Ready Performance Index Achievement Score that ranks in at least the 93rd percentile," a news release from the governor's office stated.  "Greatest Gains schools must earn a three-year average CCRPI Progress Score that ranks in at least the 93rd percentile."

Of the two categories, awards are offered in four tiers; platinum, gold, silver and bronze.

In the Hall County School District, C.W. Davis Middle School, Johnson High School and West Hall Middle School won Greatest Gaines awards, silver platinum and bronze respectively.

In the Gainesville City School District, Gainesville Exploration Academy won a gold Greatest Gains award.

Forsyth County and city of Buford school systems were among four districts in the state where at least 60 percent of eligible schools received awards.  22 Forsyth County schools picked up honors.  Buford High School and Buford Middle school were that district's two winners.

Gwinnett County Public Schools, the largest district in the state, won the most awards in the region with 26.

Habersham and White County school districts both had three winning schools.

One school each in the Dawson, Franklin, Hart, Towns and Union County school systems won an award.  Jefferson High School won honors in each category.

"By implementing the best methods for teaching young minds, educators at Highest Performing and Greatest Gains schools are going above and beyond to help their students develop the skills needed for future success," Deal said in the release.  "Young minds are Georgia’s most valuable resource and we appreciate the schools across the state working to provide each student with an opportunity to succeed."

The awards were developed by Governor’s Office of Student Achievement and are part of the state's Single Statewide Accountability System.
