Fire destroys unoccupied Banks County chicken house near Lula

LULA — Banks County officials are continuing their investigation of what caused a fire that destroyed an unoccupied chicken house on Emory Chambers Road near Lula Monday morning.

Banks County E-9-1-1 was notified of the fire at 11:10 a.m.

When initial units arrived on scene, they found the chicken house to be one-third involved by fire, but within about eight minutes firefighters reported it was three-quarters involved with collapse of half the structure, according to information provided by Banks County Fire/EMS Chief Steve Nichols.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire by about noon, but it took them until just after 2 p.m. to complete their work on scene, according to Nichols.

Five Banks County fire engines, an ambulance, a rescue and fire captain responded, along with Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Department. Deputies from Banks County Sheriff’s Office also responded.

While the poultry house has been empty for some time, it still had power hooked up at the time of the fire, according to Nichols, who said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
