Cross country: Branch boys and girls put up strong finishes as state

CARROLLTON — The Flowery Branch girls and boys teams each posted top 10 finishes, including a third place individual performance for Erika Plummer, as the GHSA Cross Country Championships got under way in Carrollton on Friday.

Plummer ran her way to a 19 minute, 36.57 second finish in the Class AAAAA finale to post the fastest time of all area girls runners competing on Friday -- 47 seconds off the gold medal performance in Class AAAAA. Plummer's work helped the Lady Falcons finish fourth overall, as they posted an average time of 21:02.27. Fellow Region 8-AAAAA competitor Buford took 10th with an average of 22:44.42.

Meanwhile, Collin Kilgore completed the boys Class AAAAA meet in 17:00.34 to finish sixth individually -- best among northeast Georgia competitors on Friday. He paced a Falcons team that took sixth with an average time of 18:01.22. Buford finished 16th with an average of 18:41.44.

Dozens more area runners will take their shot at state glory on Saturday, as Classes AA-AAAA, AAAAAA and A Public commence their races in Carrollton.
