Authorities investigate murder-suicide in north Hall County

A father and his son are dead in what authorities say was a murder-suicide on Thompson Mill Road in north Hall County Saturday night.

In a Monday morning media release, Hall County Sheriff's Deputy Stephen Wilbanks identified the two as Cameron Clark Martin, 29, and his father, Paul Cowan Martin, 56.

Deputies responded just before midnight to a residence near U.S. 129/Cleveland Highway on a call about a suicidal person who had been shot, according to Wilbanks.

Due to the nature of the call, Wilbanks said the sheriff's office SWAT team and Gainesville Police negotiators responded to the residence and tried to make contact with the resident.

"After all efforts to establish contact with anyone inside failed, a robot was inserted into the house and discovered one deceased person," Wilbanks stated.  "The SWAT team then made entry into the home and completed the search, discovering an additional deceased person."

Wilbanks said both men were killed by gunfire.

Investigators learned that Cameron Martin had reached out to family members, indicating he was suicidal.  Paul Martin went to the residence and was shot, according to Wilbanks.

"The son then contacted family members, and they in turn called 911," Wilbanks said.  "This case remains under investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Criminal Investigations Division."
