Officials haven’t identified man killed by tractor-trailer in Martin

TOCCOA — A pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a tractor-trailer truck on Ga. 17 in Martin Monday night.

Preliminary information from Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa shows that the unknown male was wearing dark clothing on the shoulder of Ga. 17 just south of the Ga. 328 (Gumlog Road) intersection at the time of the fatal collision.

The 2015 Volvo tractor-trailer tanker truck, driven by a 57-year-old North Carolina man, was traveling south on Ga. 17 in the right travel lane, just south of the Ga. 328 intersection, according to GSP.

“Driver 1 [the truck’s driver] advised a white male pedestrian in dark clothing ‘dove’ into the roadway at the last second from the right shoulder, in front of his vehicle, further advising that he was unable to avoid impact,” the preliminary GSP report states. “Vehicle 1’s right front then struck the pedestrian, causing fatal injuries.”

The truck driver, Keith Inman, was not injured and neither impairment nor distraction is suspected, according to GSP.

There were no lights on the shoulder of the highway where the collision occurred, according to GSP.
