Georgia's Veterans Hall of Fame looks for nominees

By Jerry Gunn Reporter

ALTO — Friends and family of Georgia military veterans may choose to honor them by nominating them to the newly formed Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame.

Georgia has one of the few Military Veteran Halls of Fame, according to its chairman, retired U.S. Army Colonel Rick White, who is the Hall of Fame Chairman of the Board.

White, while visiting historic Fort Hollingsworth in Banks County during the Memorial Day weekend, said his organization reviews Hall of Fame nominees.

"Out of our 50 states there are only 10 that have a military veterans Hall of Fame, so as Georgians we should be very proud that Georgia has a Military Veterans Hall of Fame," White said.

White said if a veteran is born in Georgia, has lived in the state 10 years, or joined the service in Georgia, he or she is eligible for nomination.

More than 770,000 veterans now live in the state of Georgia. White said valor, achievement, and service are the three categories considered for nomination.

Valor would include awarded heroic actions in combat; achievement would include significant contributions to the well-being of the military while in service; service is a significant contribution to the local community, state or nation after leaving the military. The nominated veteran may be either alive or deceased.

The Hall of Fame defines a veteran as a person with an  Honorable Discharge and a DD Form 214 from the active or reserve component of the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard.

The Veterans Hall of Fame  is in its third year of operation in Georgia.

White invited those interested in getting more information or making a nomination to go online to GMVHOF.org or call 706-302-2220.
