Newly elected Clermont Town Council member, Joe McGoogan, dies

CLERMONT - The man elected to Clermont Town Council on Tuesday passed away late Thursday morning.

Seth Weaver, Mayor Pro Tem, confirmed the death of Joe McGoogan.

"Joe was a nice guy and we were looking forward to working with him on the council," said Weaver.

City Clerk Sandra Helton said earlier Thursday that something like this has never happened before.

The Council consulted with their attorney to determine what will happen with the city council seat.

"He had just gotten elected Tuesday... and we will have to hold a special election for his position in March," said Weaver.

Weaver said a part of the city's bylaws indicated they needed to hold a special election.

"You don't want to think about it this quick into the game, with him just passing away, but moving forward it seems like we're moving awful quick with this... it's something you want to move slow with but we got to move with [it], also."
