FORT MILL, S.C. -- The Gwinnett Braves shut out the Charlotte Knights 7-0 in the team's season finale on Monday at Knight's Stadium in Fort Mill, S.C. The G-Braves finished the 2010 campaign one game over .500 at 72-71.
The G-Braves jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the first inning. With one out, Dan Nelson singled on a ground ball to right field and then moved to second on a Joe Thurston single. Brent Clevlen would plate both Nelson and Thurston on a double to center field. With the G-Braves pitching staff blanking the Knights, the early offense would prove to be all the team would need to secure the victory.
Starter Erik Cordier picked up his first Triple-A win throwing 7.1 innings of shut out ball. He finished with three strike outs and only allowed four hits. Stephen Marek came in to relieve Cordier in the eighth and faced only one batter, forcing Dayan Viciedo to hit into a double play. Craig Kimbrel stuck out two and gave up one hit in the ninth.
Clevlen was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and with a two run homer in the eighth, Luis Bolivar was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI. Barbaro Canizares was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
The G-Braves begin the 2011 campaign on April 7th with a season-high nine game homestand at Coolray Field. The opening homestand features visits from the Durham Bulls (April 7-10), Norfolk Tides (April 11-13) and Charlotte Knights (April 14-15) - all International League South Division rivals.
