Ticket Amnesty Program

ATLANTA - DeKalb County has gotten $1.6 million so far from a program offering amnesty on old traffic violations.

The county has a backlog of 500,000 citations from the past 10 years. The county's Recorders Court offered amnesty to drivers during April to help reduce it before an announced crackdown on old citations.

Chief Judge Nelly Withers told county commissioners Tuesday the program closed up to 10,000 cases.

Starting next week, the court will begin issuing warrants for drivers who did not pay their old tickets.

The Georgia Department of Driver Services says drivers get another 28 days to pay before facing license suspensions.
