Forecasters fine-tuning Christmas weekend outlook

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - The National Weather Service (NWS) says drivers in north Georgia might be wise to stay off the roads on Christmas Day.

Forecaster Shirley Lamback says precipitation is expected Friday night and could be a mix of rain and snow, especially in the mountains. Temperatures are expected to be in the lower 30s.

Lamback says a rain and snow mix is expected in metro Atlanta Saturday morning.
She says north Georgia should be getting mostly snow Saturday, with rain and snow mixed in metro Atlanta. Later, she says the mix should change to mainly snow for much of north Georgia, including the Atlanta area.

With temperatures dropping to the mid-20s Saturday night, Lamback says there could be some accumulation.

Earlier the NWS said 2-4 inches were possible in some mountain areas, 1-3 inches as far south as Atlanta and Athens and an inch or less as far south as Macon and Vidalia. (See earlier story.)

The Weather Channel says there's a chance the cold air won't arrive in Georgia in time to mix it up with the moist air and create the snow but there is nothing certain at this point.
