NEW YORK - Stocks gained modest ground in light, post-Christmas trading.
The Dow rose 47 points to 8,515. For the week, the index was down about 64 points.
The S&P 500 was up 4 and a-half points to 872.
And the Nasdaq composite gained 5 points to 1,530.
Advancing issues topped decliners by a 3 to 1 margin.
New York Stock Exchange volume came to 1.7 billion shares. On the Nasdaq composite, volume was 578 million shares.
