A hiker who was found dead on Springer Mountain earlier this year has now been identified. According to the GBI, the man was 41-year-old Stephen Lucas Ryan of Pennsylvania. They did not say how he died.

The GBI says that they were able to identify the man with the help of the FBI and the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.

Original Story, Mar. 31: The Georgia Bureau of Investigation released information Thursday about a man whose body was found on Springer Mountain in January.

The man is believed to have been hiking in the area, according to a press release. His body was found on Jan. 21 off the Benton MacKaye Trail, a portion of the Appalachian Trail in Fannin County.

The GBI is hoping to identify the man based on information released to the public. The man was wearing a small gray T-shirt, a gray fleece long sleeve shirt, tan Wrangler brand cargo pants size 30x32, gray wool boot socks, and Keen brand hiking boots size 10.5.

He also had in his possession a black Thermal-FR brand fleece quarter zip pullover, a dark gray Champion brand quarter zip fleece, a black Uline skull cap with rechargeable light attachment, and a small black folding shovel.

The investigation is ongoing. However, anyone with information that may help identify the man is asked to contact the GBI GBI Cleveland Office at 706-348-4866. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), online at https://gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online, or by downloading the See Something, Send Something mobile app.
