The city of Lula has lifted the Boil Water Advisory issued Monday night.

City Manager Dennis Bergin said Saturday afternoon the advisory had been issued as a precautionary measure, noting Lula's system had experienced a "significant a loss of system-wide water pressure and reserve capacity" after a number of homes and businesses experienced burst pipes during the cold snap that moved through the area over the Christmas holiday weekend.

"The city reported at one time the city was losing over 30,000 gallons of water an hour and usage was far outpacing the systems well(s) production," Bergin said. "The record cold resulted in water systems throughout the region facing similar challenges."

The advisory was lifted Saturday afternoon.

Cold weather issues now have prompted Lula officials to issue a Boil Water Advisory for its customers.

City Manager Dennis Bergin said the advisory, issued Monday night, will remain in effect until further notice due to low and sometimes no water pressure resulting from burst pipes at homes and businesses in the city.

Lula water customers should boil water for one minute after it reaches a rolling boil before drinking it, using it for food preparation or in baby food.

“We have been working water issues since yesterday,” Bergin said earlier Monday. "Overnight, things didn't get any better  Tank levels are at one-third. We opened the Gainesvile two-inch water line last night.”

Even more of a potential issue is what might happen in the event of a fire.

Bergin said he contacted Hall County Fire Rescue to alert the agency’s about possible low water pressure.

While the city has not located any leaks on its side of meters so far, that also means there is nothing it can do to help reduce flow..

Residents with water leaks should turn off the water at the street or at the in-house shutoff.

Anyone who sees a leak on the city water system, such as along a roadway, should call Lula City Hall at (706) 869-3801 and follow instructions to report it and the address where it is occurring.
