The Hall County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Unit and Oakwood Police detained a man with an arrest warrant who had a gun pointed at himself in an Oakwood parking lot Thursday afternoon.

According to a press release from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, officials began looking for the man after they received a tip that the suspect was in the area of Mundy Mill Road in Oakwood. The suspect whose name has not been released, had a warrant for child molestation.

Around 12:30 p.m., Oakwood police and sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop the suspect’s pick-up truck in a traffic stop. The man pulled into the parking lot of what was previously a barbeque restaurant and stepped out of his vehicle with a handgun pointed to his head, Derek Booth with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office said in the press release.

Police and warrant unit deputies secured the location and spoke with the suspect who surrendered without incident.

“The law enforcement family is just that, a family. I’m grateful for the Oakwood Police Department working together with our deputies to diffuse this situation with no injury to the public, officers or suspect,” Sheriff Gerald Couch said.

The suspect was taken to the Hall County Jail. His identity and charges are not available at this time.
