Oakwood City Police Chief Randall Moon will retire at the end of the month after 25 years at the helm of the police department.
Moon served the city of Oakwood for a total of 29 years, joining in 1990 and becoming chief in 1994. He previously served as Lieutenant of Operations, Criminal Investigator, and as a Sergeant over the Patrol Division. He also served with the State of Georgia Lake Lanier Islands Police Authority and the State of Arizona.
"[Chief Moon] has served us well and decided it was time to retire," said City Manager Stan Brown following Monday's city council meeting. "He had the time in to do this several years ago, but he has chosen to stay on with us, but he's ready to start that next chapter of his life. So we wish him well, we're going to miss him. It'll be a hard position to fill but we are - in fact, today was the closing day for applications. We'll start the review and selection process and interviews."
Brown said they do not have an interim selected currently, and will go through the interview process and see where that goes.
Alongside his accomplishments in Oakwood, Moon is a life member of the Georgia Association of Chiefs; he has served as Chairman of Control Board for the Hall County Multi Agency Narcotics Squad (4 years,) Lt. Governor Casey Cagle’s Public Safety Advisory Board, and the advisory board for Georgia Public Safety Training Center (5 years.) He was an honor graduate from both the Georgia Police Academy and the Arizona Police Academy, and he received the Oakwood Police “Advanced Criminal Enforcement Award” three times.
A citizens drop in reception will be held February 27 from 2 pm to 4 pm at Oakwood City Hall.
