It was a pair of Peach State speedsters sweeping the 2019 season opener for the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Georgia over the weekend.

Brandon Overton from Evans, Georgia took the win on Friday night, while Shane Clanton from Zebulon, Georgia was victorious on Saturday night.

On Friday night, Overton led all 50 laps en route to his fourth career series victory and a $10,000 payday.

Overton took the lead on lap one over polesitter Chase Junghans and never looked back, going flag-to-flag for the win.

“I just rolled off on the outside of that front row,” Overton said. “Hell, if I’d have lost tonight, I’d have been pretty upset, myself. I just got the job done, I guess. Everything fell our way and it had been going pretty (bad), so, it’s time for a change.”

His journey to Victory Lane on Friday night was anything but comfortable, and full of pressure from runner-up Chris Madden and third-place finisher Brian Shirley.

Darrell Lanigan came home in fourth, with Junghans fifth.

On Saturday night, Shane Clanton snapped a year-and-a-half winless streak by dominating the 50 lap feature en route to the win.

Clanton, the 2015 Series champion, had gone 51 races without a win before earning his fourth victory at Screven and 43rd all-time in series competition, holding off Kyle Hardy and Chase Junghans to the checkered flag.

“It feels real good,” Clanton said. “To go almost a year and a half… like I said at the banquet (last year), it just makes you mad. And the guy who wins, it just makes him more determined to come back and win again, and that’s what we’ve done. We’ve worked awful hard over the winter to build a new racecar here.”

Taking the lead on lap 1, Clanton faced several long strings of lapped traffic. But Clanton was able to handle the pressure from those behind him.

“I guess it’s lucky to get number one but I think our car was good enough to pass a couple of cars,” Clanton said. “I was just biding my time, trying not to get into too much lapped traffic, just didn’t want to get myself in a bind. We rode a long way, and to come up with the win, it’s pretty special.”

Brandon Sheppard and Mike Norris rounded out the top five finishers.

Up next for the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series is a trip to Florida’s Volusia Speedway Park for four nights of races, February 13-16 as a part of the 48th annual DIRTcar Nationals.
